Scyther Gijinka

Pokemon

Photographer: Reid Brazel

All the armor on my costume is worbla and my blades are expanding foam covered in worbla. Everything is primed with wood glue and painted with acrylic paint. The wings are a wood frame, wire for the details, and cellophane. The wings are made so that they can be folded down to make walking around at crowded conventions a little easier. The bodysuit is just a stretchy white fabric and the wig was originally from Arda-Wigs and styled by me. I wear red contacts with the costume and the make up is Kryolan Aquacolor.

The blades were, by far, the most difficult part to make. It was really hard to get the sizing right compared to my body and carving/shaping them was also pretty difficult for me. I ended up having to redo the blades completely from scratch before I was satisfied with them. The rest of the costume went surprisingly easy.

My character is a Scyther from Pokemon. If you want to get technical, it is a Scyther gijinka or a human form of a Scyther.

Scyther has always been one of my favorite pokemon since I first started playing the games when I was around 7 years old. I loved just its design (those scythes are just amazing!) and I've always been a fan of the hack and slash battle style. I still catch and train Scyther in my Pokemon teams to this day.

The photos were taken by my fiancé and cosplay partner at a lake on my college campus. I chose the location for this shoot because it looked very much like the Safari Zone you can first encounter Scyther in the first Pokemon games. It had the tall grass, the trees, and the small lake in the center. It was just perfect for my Scyther.

I debuted my Scyther at Wizard World Chicago Comic Con this past August. I was honestly surprised that so many people recognized my character. Being at a comic book convention I didn't think Pokemon gijinkas would be such a popular thing, but I ended up standing in one spot with my fellow Marowak cosplayer for 5 hours straight because people kept stopping to take pictures.

I got into cosplay because it's every form of art that I love rolled into one. I have the absolute time of my life cosplaying and it's because of all the work that goes into it, from drawing out the plans for the costume to bringing the character to life at a convention. I've actually only been making costumes for a little over a year at this point, so I'm still kind of new to the hobby. I started in the summer of 2013 and I haven't taken a break since.
