Butterfree

Cowslip Gijinkadex Pokemon fanart

Photographer: Chastten Cosplay Photography

Butterfree is a Pokémon, the design is made by Cowslip.

These photo’s were taken at the gardens that belong to Castle Arcen in the Netherlands. The character itself is fanart, a Pokémon made human. When I first saw this design of Butterfree I immediately fell in love and just had to make it.

The skirt consists of 16 wings in total, all different sizes and painted by hand. They’re attached to a bodice which is made of brocade covered with chiffon, and has 40 crocheted flowers (which I learned to do for this very cosplay). The bust was a little tricky because there isn’t a real way to get these straight pleats that is acceptable in sewing laws. So they’re just pleated and sown to the bodice underneath by hand. The lines were painted on.

The wig was the most difficult part to make for me. A large ball is inside that bun. It’s pretty heavy. XD It was originally a short wig with a loose ponytail which I could clip on. I took that ponytail apart to glue it around the styrofoam ball. Making that was my worst nightmare for weeks. XD It’s sown onto the wig. I curled a strand of hair which is also sown into the wig. And last the four flowers (two red and two blue) are also sown on (after making them of course). I love making those flowers. The two antennas are chopsticks with Worbla around it (my first Worbla project).

What I love most about this costume is the overall elegant look. Everyone recognized the Pokémon, even though it looks nothing like the original design. I’ve worn this costume to Animecon and Abunaicon in 2015.

I’ve been cosplaying since 2009, when I made my first costume and won a fashion show contest with it (and learned how to sew at the same time). This motivated me to continue to learn how to sew and challenge myself with every new project.
