Utena Tenjou, one of the most iconic female heroes in japanese animation is easily the only fictional character I identify with completely. Having decided to fight what the world, society and deeply rooted prejudices and expectations had in store for her, Utena has pursued her lifelong mission to search for that valiant prince who raised her from her ashes after tragic loss of her family, vowing her to keep her chivalry in her for as long as she lives.

She decided to become a prince valiant like her own. After coming to Ohtori academy and ending up in a strange dueling club who fought for the hand of Rose Bride, a mysterious girl who held the key to the world’s revolution, Utena has gained a friend in this girl, Anthy. Utena saw her young self in Anthy, alone and unprotected, and decided to continue fighting solely to defend her, and through her duels she kept finding pieces of her Prince, towards to revolution of the world.

I don’t usually cosplay girls, but Utena as a character spoke to me and I felt that I must bring her to life. Also, as I strove to make it special, I also made her very own Rose Bride dress, from the series finale, in which she discovers she was never meant to be anyone’s princess at all, but her own and her friend’s prince instead, thus achieving her revolution. The costumes perform as a perfect duo and describe Utena’s complex story in a way I wanted it and I think they do her character justice.

I’ve made both of the costumes myself, from the close-fitting tops and rich skirts, to modifications of ladles and Christmas decoration for pauldrons. I made the sword with the help of my cospartner Hisayume, and the sword and medallions were painted by Ferasha.

My makeup for this set is also done by my cosplay senpai Ferasha, and the studio photos were taken by Aleksandar Jovkovic. All of post-processing is done by me.
