I wore my Black Widow costume to a Free Comic Book Day event hosted by Readers Den in Cape Town, South Africa. It was just a few days before the event that I decided to cosplay as Black Widow instead of another costume that I was busy with.

It took me about three days to put everything together, this is the quickest I have ever worked on a costume.

I already owned a pvc catsuit but it was old and the pvc was perishing at an alarming rate. So I had to patch it up all over as well as sew in darts to give it the proper form since it was rather shapeless. The accessories weren’t too difficult to make, but figuring out what to use to make them was a bit challenging since i had such a short time to make it in.

The belt is made out of heat shaped craft foam circles that I stitched together and spray painted gold. The bullet bracelets were the most challenging to figure out but I think that my ultimate solution worked out pretty well. I created the bracelets using tampon applicators since they were the closest to the correct shape. I spray painted them gold and joined them together by punching holes and threading elastic through them.

Fortunately I already owned the perfect wig for the character as well as gloves and boots.

I wore it to Free Comic Book Day and it was a lot more popular than I was expecting! So many people were complimenting my costume and wanting photos of me and taken with me including men, ladies, kids, families and many little girls which I thought was great!

I won second place in the costume contest, only to be beaten by Iron Man! At least the winner was part of my team!

I usually have a penchant for cosplaying cute characters and this was my first time portraying a more serious character as well as a comic book character. It was great and now I really want to cosplay more comic book characters!

My first time cosplaying was at Anime North in Toronto, Canada in 2003. The cosplay bug bit me and I just loved it. My first costume was commissioned but after that I bought a sewing machine and taught myself how to sew so that I could create my own costumes. I have been cosplaying on and off since then. During my years of cosplaying I have won several competitions. Though I cosplay for the creativity and enjoyment and not for entering competitions. If I happen to win anything, then that’s just a bonus :)
