Griffith

Berserk

Photographer: Aleksandar Jovković, edited by Tenshi

"Berserk" holds a very special place in my heart: it was the first anime I’ve ever seen. With the cruelty of its plot twists and the psychological complexity of its characters, it absolutely blew my mind and got me hooked on Japanese animation as such. And Griffith was my first encounter with the ever-popular Japanese trope of a white-haired prettyboy bent on destroying the world just because he can’t get what he wants. His duality fascinated me, for Griffith was a man who thought highly of himself, believing to be above such petty things as human emotions - and yet it’s his broken heart that caused him to fall, first ruining his own life, and then happily - and very thoroughly - screwing up the lives of everyone around him. The finale of "Berserk" left me with my mouth hanging open, so it was only logical for me to choose Griffith as my very first megalomaniac cosplay project.

I’m proud to say this was the first cosplay armor ever made in my country, back in the spring of 2013. We had no one to ask for advice here, and foreign tutorials referred to all sorts fancy crafting materials that we couldn’t access here, so me and my friend had to literally reinvent the wheel with this one. We made do with what we had at hand: the gorget is made of a bucket, the shoulder pads are flower pots, the breastplate consists of two pieces of floor padding boards glued together, the knee pads are made of salad bowls, while the legs and the bracers are water pipes. Add hours and hours of hard work with sandpaper, acrylic putty and several shades of silver paint, there you have it, you have a Griffith. Crafting- wise, it’s probably still the cosplay I’m most proud of.

This is the second time I wore this armor - some two years after I debuted the costume - for a set of pictures by my favorite duo, Sale as photographer and Tenshi as editor.
