My character is Babydoll from Sucker Punch. Sucker Punch is one of my favourite movies and a huge influence on my life and the way I try to see myself. These girls are put in compromising situations, and they aren’t physically strong enough to defend themselves - but they do discover other ways to help themselves and each other. The message that I got was that we are in control of our own futures, if we fight hard enough for what we want.

I made my first version of this cosplay in 2011 when I was just starting to make my own cosplays. I made the top and skirt and made the little charms that hang off her gun. Aside from those, I started out with a wig from a different cosplay, less-than-accurate shoes, a gun holster I bought off eBay, and a flimsy plastic sword. Unfortunately, about a year later my top and skirt shrunk in the dryer and became just a little bit too small. I was considering retiring the cosplay - but then I got inspired by a Babydoll photoshoot done by Michelle Monique. I started by updating all of my props: my shoes, sword (and sheath this time), and my gun (made new charms). Then I decided I’d make a whole new top and skirt, and a more accurate gun holster. It was my first leather project ever. Lastly, I went through three or four wigs before I finally found the perfect one from Arda.

Next came the photoshoot. I wanted my photos to look as though they came straight from the movie, but I still wanted them to be original. VanCosplay and I collaborated, and together we created such stunning photos. I couldn’t be happier with them!

Since then I’ve been constantly working on my sewing skills, learning new ways to improve and tackling new projects. I decided to go to school for 2 years to learn more about costumes, and now I’m working as a seamstress in film and television.
