It’s cousin Dipp from Katamari Damacy! Sometimes when I see characters, I just get inspired by how they look. This was one of them...

When I decided on the cosplay, I had no idea how I was going to make the lights work. I went out and got two strings of LED Christmas lights and procrastinated for months on making them portable. (I guess that’s kind of silly, given that the lights are the main point of it...)

I made the head out of a structured fabric I usually use to make hats, and the face out of felt pieces. The dress is shiny costume vinyl, and the belt underneath to hold three of the four battery packs is made with fake leather with bits of designer fabric. Everything is hand-stitched, except the structural fabric in the head, which is actually stapled. (No machine, I mean hand-stitched. I sew in the passenger’s seat whenever I go out for a ride.) I’ve hand-sewn costumes for the past five years of conventions, and make gothic/lolita/punk clothing in the rest of my time to improve upon my skills. (If you ever hear of the brand CRA-Z, that’s me.) I guess I’ve just always loved to dress up, whenever there was an excuse to.

My first attempts at lighting failed miserably. I ended up buying three strings of fairy lights (small LEDs on a wire) online and poked them through the fabric of the dress. One string of 50 Christmas lights was re-wired for the head by someone fabulous. There are 158 lights total in the whole outfit.

I wore this cosplay for the first time at Anime Boston 2012, and it was by far my most successful costume yet. Everyone was excited to see me, and said I’d done a great job as Dip, even though I changed some aspects of the outfit from what it really is. (No platform boots/eyelashes) I counted hundreds of pictures taken of me, and won a "great cosplay" blue ribbon, even though I hadn’t entered any contests.

I’ll be going to more conventions this year as Dipp, so maybe you’ll see me around!
