Marie Antoinette is the queen of France and wife of Louis XVI, the mother of Maria Theresa, Louis Joseph and Louis Charles. She is also the lover of the Swedish Count Hans Axel von Fersen. She married the Dauphin to seal the alliance between his grandfather Louis XV and her mother, Empress Maria Theresa of Austria, when she was 14.

After the Count decided to leave and sign up for the war of independence in America, Marie Antoinette became lovesick. She began spending money in excess - expensive jewellery and clothes, attending balls every other night - to distract herself. This, in turn, weighed heavily on the taxpayers of France.
