Heroes of the Storm Photographer: Butch Lee I love Nova, and I had already cosplayed her when I decided to tackle this alternate skin. I really like the bright colors and spunk that this costume has, It’s like the polar opposite of her normal getup. I had lots of fun with the build and paint job! I can’t skate - it’s actually one of my biggest fears since I broke my wrist while trying to learn as a kid. But I wasn’t about to let that stop me! Since I knew it would be safer for conventions anyway, I built fake skates around a pair of platform shoes. I think it worked out for the best, because Nova’s roller skates are pretty stocky and exaggerated. I knew I wouldn’t be able to get that look with normal skates, and I was able to achieve just the effect I wanted by building them myself. I also stepped outside my comfort zone with this costume because I had to use two faux ponytails. I’m used to using my real hair with almost all of my cosplay since I tend to lean towards blonde characters. Not only was I inexperienced with wigs, the hair pieces were ultra long and tough as heck to manage. I dealt with lots of tangles and stress both while attaching them to the helmet, and wearing the costume. My favorite part of this costume is the gun. I’ve been making costume props both for myself and as commissions for over a year, and I think this is probably one of the best one I’ve made! I even put a little crosshair inside the scope that you can see when you look through it. Not too many people can actually see it from the outside, but it’s a fun touch if I’m showing it off to someone and have them peek through! So far, I’ve worn this costume to two conventions, Eternalcon and AnimeNEXT (both in the same weekend). I plan on fixing up the ponytail extensions and wearing it lots more next year!
